Sengkang is the capital city of Wajo Regency. Wajo is a small
town located on the Island of Sulawesi, Indonesia.
Sengkang has a souvenir of silk fabric craft that is famous
for its subtlety, both in Indonesia and overseas.
According to the locals, silk weaving is a tradition handed
down by the women of Wajo. In ancient times, weaving is done as an activity of
waiting for the return of her husband who worked in paddy fields.
Silk is produced from the cocoons of silkworms fed mulberry
leaves. Silkworms produce cocoons that can be spun into silk fibers. There are
hundreds types of silkworms, but the best silk produced by a silkworm cocoons
of the mulberry tree which has the scientific name Bombyx mori.
The delicate silk fibers spun by a process resembling the
process of the silkworm spinning its cocoon. This process was then adopted to
make silk fiber spinning tool to produce a beautiful silk fabrics.
In this place, visitors can see the planting of mulberry and
breeding the caterpillars until finally ready to be processed into silk thread.
The spinning process itself is quite time-consuming where a roll of silk can be
made for months.
The special characteristics of Sengkang silk fabric are stripes with bright colors. The price is varied depending on the quality of fabric, ranging from Rp. 30.000 - Rp. 900,000 per meter.
Sengkang silk fabric is used as the material for fashion such
as blouse, blazer, shirt, skirt, accessories, etc.
How to get there
Sengkang city can be reached from the Sultan Hasanuddin
International Airport by car or motorbike in about 4 hours.
