Mendut Temple is located in Mendut Village, Mungkid
District, Magelang regency, Central Java, Indonesia, about 38 km towards the
northwest of Yogyakarta. The location is only about 3 km from Borobudur temple.
Mendut temple was built by the first king of the Syailendra
dynasty in 824 AD. The temple was first discovered back in 1836. The whole
structure of Mendut Temple was found, except for the roof. In 1897-1904, the
Dutch government under took the first efforts of
restoration with satisfactory results, although still far from perfect.
Mendut has a quadrangular ground-plan. The height of this
temple is 26.40 m entirely. The existence of three large Buddha statues in this temple has the beauty of
a very high both in physical form as well as artworks. Three statues of Buddha
that were in the temple are considered to emit the light of purity. So among the Buddhist, this temple is an efficacious
place for prayer. Not only Buddhists in the country, but also from abroad.
Candi Mendut can be reached in about 1 hour from the international airport of Adi Sucipto
Yogyakarta, Indonesia.
