Ketupat is a typical Indonesian food made of rice and wrapped in woven palm leaves. This food was encountered during the major holidays of Muslims (Eidul Fitr).

Indonesia as a country with a Muslim majority population makes the major holidays of Islam as an important moment to chat with friends and stay in touch with families. Therefore, making ketupat in the house is one of the things that must be done. Moreover, only in Indonesia the moment of homecoming  when Eidul Fitr becomes an obligation and a kind of tradition and habits that have been ingrained for generations. People who live far from his hometown and his family would deliberately prepare to return home and welcome Eidul Fitr with his family.


Ketupat is a food that must exist when welcoming Eid. Usually, relatives or neighbors accidentally come together to make ketupat skin (woven palm leaf) and fill it with rice together. This is usually done two days or a night before Eid celebrations. Ketupat is usually served with a dish of chicken, lamb, or beef.



The history of ketupat
At first ketupat was born when Islam began to enter into the archipelago. To spread Islam in the archipelago, one of walisongo that is Raden Mas Sahid commonly called as Sunan Kalijaga, introducing ketupat as a tradition in Islam to the people who had previously been established the tradition of ketupat as a form of acculturation.
